New damping technology in China makes structural engineering

Damper is a device that provides resistance to motion and thus reduces motion energy. It has the effect of vibration and energy dissipation. It has been applied to buildings, bridges, railways and other structural projects as early as the 1970s. In order to make up for a series of defects of the traditional hydraulic damper, such as oil leakage, short service life and high maintenance cost, reduce the shaking feeling of the building and improve the safety and comfort of the building, the team led by academician Chen Zhengqing of Hunan University has completed the project of "new technology and application of high energy consumption density and high critical speed permanent magnet eddy current damping" after more than 10 years of research, and won the first prize of the provincial technological invention award of the 2020 Hunan Science and technology award.
 
"The eddy current damper can be understood as a generator plus an electric heater. The mechanical energy generated by the movement of objects is converted into electrical energy through the principle of electromagnetic induction, and then immediately converted into heat energy for consumption." Niuhuawei, a team member and professor of Civil Engineering College of Hunan University, introduced.
 
At present, the most common damper in civil structures is hydraulic damper, which not only requires high sealing conditions, but also will fail after aging, wear and oil leakage under long-term vibration. Eddy current damper is a pure metal structure, which has more durability. Eddy current damper has stronger ability to adapt to special environment. The bridge of Sichuan Tibet line almost experiences great temperature difference every day. The performance of hydraulic damper is easily affected by temperature, while eddy current damper has better stability. In addition, the eddy current damper has higher sensitivity, and it can still move flexibly and consume energy even in the case of small motion but small force.
 
Based on this new eddy current damping technology, the R & D team has developed 3 categories and 12 series of eddy current damper products, which have broken through the scope of application in civil engineering and gradually entered into new energy engineering and other fields. At present, they have been used in the Dongting Lake Bridge of Hangzhou Ruili expressway, the Shishou Yangtze River Bridge in Hubei, the cangmu bridge of Lalin railway, the Shanghai center building It has been successfully applied in major projects at home and abroad, such as Beijing Daxing International Airport and nooriii tower optical thermal power station in Morocco.
 
Now the project has entered the second stage, realizing the collaborative design of high energy consumption density and high critical speed of eddy current damper, forming a complete set of eddy current damping technology and realizing industrialization.
