Chen Jinlin: tackling key problems of magnetic damping techn

High speed rail, airports, high-rise buildings, tower bridges... With the increasing speed of high-speed rail and the increasing architectural design, stability, vibration reduction and safety have also become issues of increasing concern to the broad masses of the people. In the field of vibration reduction technology, advanced technology has been blocked by foreign countries for many years, which has firmly stuck the "neck" of improving the vibration reduction technology level of infrastructure and national defense military facilities in China.

The best way to break through the blockade is self-reliance. Scientific and technological innovation is urgent! Chen Jinlin, co-founder of Hunan Xiaozhen Engineering Technology Co., Ltd., located in Changsha high tech Zone, and his team, under the leadership of Chen Zhengqing, an academician of the Chinese Academy of engineering, developed the world's first new magnetic damping technology, unlocking the "choke neck" at one stroke, and China has achieved a leap from "following" to "leading" in this field. Recently, the reporter interviewed Chen Jinlin to understand the story behind the research and development of new magnetic damping technology.

Meet dreams in tackling key problems

Break through the problem of "neck sticking" of magnetic damping

What is magnetic damping? Chen Jinlin made a simple example to reporters: buildings, bridges, towers and high-speed railways need to withstand the turbulence caused by strong winds, earthquakes and high-speed sports when standing or moving, and they need to "cool down" and "calm down", among which the technology needed is magnetic damping.

12 years ago, Chen Jinlin's life was intertwined with magnetic damping because of the Rongjiang bridge of Xiamen Shenzhen railway. "The Rongjiang bridge of Xiamen Shenzhen railway is an arch bridge. During the design, it was found that the suspenders of this bridge will vibrate under wind load, and dampers need to be installed." Chen Jinlin recalled that as a railway bridge, the damper also needs to be installed on a boom up to 40 meters high, which requires that the damper must be highly reliable and maintenance free, while the traditional hydraulic damper cannot do this because of the risk of oil leakage. "At that time, our magnetic damper vibration reduction technology has been patented, and the prototype has also been developed. The design director of the bridge was ecstatic when he learned the excellent performance of the magnetic damper and adopted our technology. After the magnetic damper was installed, the vibration of the bridge was effectively controlled, and so far, there has been no significant vibration of the boom."

In this way, through personal participation in the research of magnetic damping, Chen Jinlin gradually realized that in addition to being applied to bridge construction, magnetic damping technology can also be applied to rail trains, automobiles, transmission towers, military and other fields.

With the "small test ox knife", we need to increase research and development efforts and expand application scenarios to make more useful attempts. In order to better devote himself to scientific research, Chen Jinlin quit his job in the company, followed academician Chen Zhengqing to study for his doctoral degree, and continued to take root in the research and development of magnetic damping technology.

The reason why the bottleneck of scientific research in important fields is called "neck sticking" technology is precisely because the infrastructure construction of the motherland is being steadily promoted and is hampered everywhere because of backward science and technology. "In recent years, China has been suppressed by western developed countries in some high-tech fields. We have stood on the shoulders of giants. I must take the lead in taking this step, work together with my team, forge ahead, overcome the 'neck' technology in key fields, and break the blockade and monopoly of western high-end vibration reduction technology." Up to now, damping technology has been industrialized in the field of civil engineering, demonstration projects and small batch applications have been completed in the field of wind power, and prototypes have been developed and tested in the fields of military industry, engineering machinery, heavy-duty vehicles and rail transit.

"In 2021, we expanded our production capacity again, and projects in bridge construction have been spread all over the country, including the influential Tibet Muqiao bridge project of Sichuan Tibet railway and the vibration reduction project of the National Pavilion of the Beijing Winter Olympics. In terms of research and development, we broke through the technical bottleneck of super fatigue resistance and ultra-high sensitivity of the wind turbine tower vibration damper, and successfully applied this technology to the vibration control engineering of wind turbines for the first time in the world." Chen Jinlin is full of expectations for the company's planning and future development.

See the dawn in the dark night

Hunan spirit strengthens the foundation of scientific research

To help the infrastructure of the motherland, we need not only "scholars" in the laboratory, but also "walkers" on the road.

With regard to the relationship between scientific research and industry, Chen Jinlin said: "scientific research needs to implement new ideas and discoveries into products or services through industry, and industry needs scientific research to provide innovative driving forces for the renewal and iteration of products." In 2016, he and several teachers and classmates of Hunan University jointly founded Hunan Xiaozhen Engineering Technology Co., Ltd. and settled the company in the National University Science Park of Hunan University. In recent years, the science park has introduced and served 167 entrepreneurship projects for teachers and students, and financed more than 5million yuan for Xiaozhen engineering company.

Under the leadership of academician Chen Zhengqing, through unremitting efforts, Chen Jinlin and his team not only made a revolutionary breakthrough in scientific research, but also improved the wind and seismic resistance of large buildings such as Beijing Daxing International Airport and Shanghai center building to the international leading level by applying the magnetic damping technology they developed.

Entrepreneurship is never easy. In September 2020, Chen Jinlin was once again faced with a choice, and this time he hesitated. The company has been on track, and the existing technology has been stably applied. As long as it is steady, the company's performance will not be a problem. But there is always an endless "Mount Everest" to do scientific research. Do you want to further study it and move towards the top of the world?

Huxiang spirit of being the first became his confidence: only by constantly breaking through the "neck" technology and breaking the western technological monopoly and blockade, can he live up to his youth and youth; Applying scientific research achievements to the great cause of building a socialist modern country in an all-round way is my original intention and happiness.

To overcome difficulties and overcome difficulties, life has lived up to this sincere ideal and feelings - at present, Chen Jinlin and his team have obtained more than 30 invention patents from 12 countries, including the United States, Germany and Japan. They are planning to do a good job in the domestic market, gradually go abroad, and finally become a leading enterprise in the global vibration reduction field. There is reason to believe that this day will come soon.
